My Why

Honestly ask yourself, when are you most driven? What’s the force behind it? What’s the reason you effortlessly pour yourself out toward a cause or goal? You’ll most likely find your passion in the answer to these questions.

After passing through a half-century, I’ve come to some conclusions about myself. Family trumps everything, but after family, my passions are discipling women, educating children, and everyday evangelism.

Helping women remain steadfast in their faith is my heart’s desire.

Now more than ever, I’m driven to help women prepare for these Last Days, teaching them how to stand firm, endure and persevere until King Jesus gathers us home. But hold on, there’s even more to MY WHY—a location 1,800 miles from my home in Texas, a country on the island of Hispaniola called Haiti.

In 2010 I left my heart in Haiti. My husband and I traveled on our first mission trip to Port-au-Prince six months after the infamous 7.0 earthquake that brought devastation to every infrastructure in the country, (see A Heart to Give). No video can prepare you for the sights, sounds, and smells of the poorest country in our western hemisphere. The grave need is more than one’s emotions can handle. It’s too much. But then you hold the babies. You hug the children. You hear the voices in Sunday worship. Then leave the cinderblock shelters, shanties, and tents to return to a floor with four walls and a roof called home. I was forever changed. This is WHY…

I’m driven to see the people of Haiti physically restored
and spiritually redeemed by the work of Jesus Christ in their life.

There’s a double purpose behind the work of writing and speaking. It benefits more than just those reading and listening because a large portion of proceeds are given to Teach Haiti and HIS Home for Children, Haitian organizations Shawn and I love and support. Teach Haiti educates the poorest of poor with a Christ-centered worldview and HIS Home for Children is an orphanage in Port-au-Prince. The American-run orphanage is an exception to the rule in Haiti, welcoming children with severe medical conditions.

On days when there’s no strength left to push through, I see my WHY—the picture of you, Sweet One, yielding your mighty sword and the faces of Haitian children learning to do the same.
